O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. The contestant was able to climb into the top 100 courtesy of the enthusiasm shown by judges in her performance. O'Neil was praised by the judges. She was however a complete loser in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. They were stunned by the outcome and urged the audience to support contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. Judge Werner predicted, after two more stunning performances that O'Neil would win in the Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was made public by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
